I worked with Jeff at the Bulletin as a sportswriter in the '70s. He was a great photographer, always well prepared and enthusiastic about his assignments, a good guy to work with. I was happy to see him assigned to the game or other event I was covering. Condolences to his family.

I met Jeff at Backus Hospital, introduced to me by his friend and colleague Kathy Provencher, one of the ladies I had lunch with daily. Jeff was always kind, caring and welcoming. He was so helpful to me when I was struggling to load presentations for Board meetings on our new equipment (at the time). Jeff was such a great photographer, capturing candid moments and getting just the right shot. We talked often about his plans to retire to North Conway. He worked so hard each and every day toward that end. I’m just so sorry he wasn’t able to reach that goal. When you met Jeff, you met a true friend. RIP my friend.

What a great neighborhood we were blessed to have grown up in on Killingly Ave.! We had woods, a brook, a pond to skate on, and even the Grove St. Cemetery where we learned to ride our bikes. The neighborhood was full of kids, all in roughly the same age group, and we were like brothers and sisters. Among these neighborhood kids was Jeff, the middle child of the Evans family, who became a pal to Randy Truax, my brother. They were born within a few months of each other, went to school from Kindergarten through high school together, and even lived as housemates in their early careers. How ironic that they died within a few short weeks of each other, and now will rest in peace together. So many can say they knew them both so well, and the heartache is doubled to have lost these two lifelong friends. Paula (Truax) Saucier

We were blessed to have had a 60 plus year friendship with Jeff, or J, as we called him. While we were very good friends all through our years in school in Putnam, it was in college when we truly became close. Along with Randy Truax and Lydia, we were together traveling in Jeff"s Magic Bus, when life was fun and carefree. Jeff fought and won his battle with Hodgkins Disease and we will never forget his courage and his solo cross country cycling experience to celebrate his recovery. One of our most poignant memories was receiving his phone call from a phone booth overlooking the Pacific Ocean. His first words to us were "I MADE IT". We have had so many wonderful experiences with Jeff, and we will deeply miss his wit, laugh, compassion and caring. Our connection remained strong even when life got in the way of getting together. We are so happy and thankful that we had just had a great night with him just recently. As Jeff takes one last trip on the Magic Bus, we celebrate his life and honor his memory as a family. My condolences to Jeff's loved ones. He was a special man. I have worked at Backus for all of Jeff's time here with us and he was always present for anything he could capture. His photos told stories that will continue to tell stories for years to come. I will miss his sense of humor and his sweet face, as well as how he got to know that anytime he took a photo of me he would automatically say, "I know, I know, make you look skinny!" He was the best:)

Jeff and I worked together at the Norwich Bulletin. I was always thrilled when he was assigned to shoot one of my stories. I knew he would take exactly the right photo --- one that revealed the heart of the story without words. He was truly gifted.

Back in 2018 right before I started working at Backus Hospital, I was at my fire department where we had a van donated to us from Backus Security, so my department could work on better training with the "Jaws of Life". That was the first day I was photographed in one of his many photos. Along with the first time I met Jeff. Always kind and thoughtful, smiled and laughed at my corny jokes in passing. Today during a training we held at Backus, I turned and looked at a fellow employee and said; 'It doesn't feel right not posing for Jeff... I miss him."

When people ask me how I got into the photo and video business 30 years ago, it always starts with "when I was a kid, we had a dear friend of the family who was the head photographer at a local newspaper. The guy was super cool and his job always kept him where the action was". That guy was Jeff Evans. He was disarming and trustworthy, funny, empathetic, competent, calm and present. I've tried to model myself after these great qualities he lived every day. A MAJOR influence on my life and career. I know he is in the loving embrace of the God he knew and loved. I'm thankful for all the time we had together and the legacy that lives on.

Jeff always had a ready smile, especially when taking photographs of my therapy dogs (pugs), Bella and Gracie trotting down the hall of Backus or visiting staff and patients. We will miss him!

Jeff truly loved the therapy dogs at Backus Hospital. His photographic talents always captured the dogs and moments perfectly. Jake and I will miss him terribly. All of us who knew Jeff knew him not only to be a gifted and talented visual communicator, but also a genuinely kind soul. Jeff chronicled so many stories for readers (and eventually patients and their families) in Connecticut as well as so many of the events in the lives of my friends and colleagues. Weddings were made so much more special with his gifted eye trained on friends and family at the most important moments in their lives — as well as having his calming presence and sweet smile there, too. We have been so lucky to see the world through Jeff’s eyes and get to remember him for a moment each time we see his wonderful work.

Because his work and friendship touched so many people, Jeff left his mark everywhere. Photos of weddings and family gatherings are hanging on living room walls; pictures of major events are on display in private offices and hospital buildings. The touches are everywhere, because Jeff was seemingly everywhere. I've known him for 42 years, since I was an intern at the Norwich Bulletin and he helped show me the ropes. Jeff's main lessons, taught by doing not just speaking, are good ones, and not just for reporters or photographers: Be friendly, remain curious, know that everyone has a story to tell. Oh, and: Never lose your sense of wonder. Jeff was a photojournalist to the core. It actually was not what he did (a profession), but who he was (a calling). We will all miss him terribly, but we can cherish the thousands of memories -- the images he shared. And remember those lessons. Rest in peace, good friend.

Jeff was a dear dear friend and mentor of mine. We first met when he came to Colombia, South America to photograph the missionary work there in 1983. That summer I tagged along with him, curious about his equipment and in exchange for helping him carry all his cameras gear he taught me all about photography. He was such a kind and generous man and I will never forget how he helped me over the years, especially my transition to life in the US and college. I got to come to CT and visit him and his family and tag along when he worked at the Norwich Bulletin. There’s a giant hole in my heart tonight. Jeff, thank you for the time we had and may you rest in peace.
