Obituary of Elizabeth J. Durocher
Elizabeth Jane (Carpenter) Durocher, 96, passed away peacefully at home in Putnam, Connecticut, on February 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 18, 1928, Elizabeth was the youngest of six children of the late Howard and Florence (Angell) Carpenter.
She grew up in Putnam and attended school there. Elizabeth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She worked for many years at Benny’s stores, first in Norwich and later in Danielson after moving back to Putnam. She retired in 1996. She was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Post #2212 in Taftville, Connecticut, where she served as President.
Elizabeth found great joy in watching the UConn Huskies women's basketball team and was an avid reader. Above all else, she cherished time spent with her family and enjoyed sharing stories of her childhood. On August 10, 1946, Elizabeth married Roger Durocher Sr. in Pomfret, Connecticut. Together they raised six children. Shortly after the birth of their first son, following the passing of Roger’s mother, they also welcomed and raised Roger’s three sisters—Doris, Gloria, and Patricia Durocher—as part of their family.
Elizabeth is survived by her children: William (Christine) of Goffstown, NH; Daniel (Jennifer) of Holden, MA; Roger Jr. (Diana) of Canterbury, CT; Norman (Judith) of Smithfield, RI; Diane Bean (Paul) of Norwich, CT; and Jeffrey (Nancy) of Putnam, CT. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Additionally, she leaves behind her sister-in-law Gloria Berthiaume of Brooklyn.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Roger; an infant son; a grandson; three brothers; and two sisters.
At Elizabeth's request, a private funeral service will be held for the immediate family only. Smith and Walker Funeral Home, Putnam, is entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association or a charity of one’s choice in Elizabeth’s memory.
The Durocher Family extend our heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff at Hospice of Northeastern CT for the compassionate care they provided to our mother in her final days. Your kindness, dedication, and support will never be forgotten. Her legacy of love and dedication to family will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Share a memory at Smithandwalkerfh.com
