Obituary of George A. Nichols, Jr.
George A. Nichols Jr, 83, of Elsworth, NH passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 14th 2025 with his wife of 60 years Sandra (DuClau) by his side. George was born in Dayville, CT on January 10th, 1942 son of the late George(Sr) and Pauline (Devillez) Nichols. He lived and worked in Killingly, CT for much of his life before moving to the woods of NH in 1988. He graduated from Killingly High School in 1960, played football, worked staff at Boy Scout summer camp staff and earned his Eagle rank. After graduation he served 6yrs in the Army National Guard being honorably discharged at the rank of E5. He worked 25yrs at Glass Containers in Dayville, CT as a 1st Upkeep Feederman followed by 17 years as the proprietor of the Pike Station Store in Pike, NH, before retiring to the camp (cabin) “High Hopes” in Elsworth, NH. He drove a school bus part-time in NH for 20 years and was known for his no nonsense but caring rapport with his students; decorating his bus with seasonal themes and with always an entertaining hat to match.
George was an avid outdoorsman and loved to camp, hike, fish and hunt spending many a day afield. He was known locally as the 'fish whisperer' as he could always catch fish even when they were not biting for anyone else. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader mentoring and counseling youth on both outdoor and life skills. He was a lifelong member of the BPOE participating in many community service events over the decades. There were few things that he couldn't build, repair or maintain with a few tools and a bit of elbow grease. He fit into his adopted NH, with that full beard, flannel shirt and suspenders he looked all the part of a native of NH. Always with a entertaining story, embedded with a lifetime of wisdom, he was a colorful character around the coffee counter at the Pike Station Store or an ice fishing hole.
He leaves his wife Sandra, his son George(III) and wife Diane (Deshefy) Nichols of Portsmouth, RI, son Christopher (deceased), daughter Tammy Nichols of Tempe, AZ, grandsons Sawyer, Colt, Weston, granddaughter Ashley, brothers Eugene Nichols of Lawrenceville, GA and Ernest Nichols of Brooklyn, CT.
