I was privileged to work with Karen and Sara Schmidt for my 7 1/2 years as Superintendent of Schools and they were (interchangeably ) president and chief negotiator for the teachers' union. Karen was a really good teacher, and an even better union officer, probably the best I ever worked with. They fiercely defended teachers rights and looked to improve their working conditions. But what separated them from others was that she and Sara were leaders who put ethics, honesty, and kids ahead of union rhetoric. And they expected the same of me, which made me a better superintendent. You will be missed.
