Obituary of Edward C. Bowen

Edward (Eddie) Bowen, 77 of Danielson, CT, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on January 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, humility, and deep devotion to his family and community.

A man of quiet strength and unwavering dedication, Edward was one of the original charter members of the South Killingly Volunteer Fire Department, serving the department and community for more than 35 years. He answered the call to help others with courage and compassion throughout his career, holding leadership roles that reflected the trust placed in him by his fellow firefighters. Edward served as Deputy Chief from 1984 to 1991, Fire Chief from 1991 to 1995, and again as Deputy Chief from 1995 until his retirement in 2003.

During his tenure with the South Killingly Fire Department, Edward played a pivotal role in advancing community safety. He was involved in developing one of the department’s first fire prevention programs and was among the first five members who helped establish the department’s repelling program efforts that demonstrated his forward-thinking leadership and commitment to protecting others.

In addition to his volunteer service, Edward worked as a professional firefighter for the University of Connecticut in Storrs, where he was respected for his reliability, strong work ethic, and calm, steady presence.

Edward also proudly served his country, first in the active United States Air Force and later in the Army National Guard, where he dedicated 20 years of service. His military career further reflected his lifelong commitment to duty, discipline, and service above self.

After retiring from fire service, Edward embraced a lifelong passion for genealogy. He became an avid researcher, devoted to uncovering family histories and preserving stories for future generations. This work reflected his thoughtful nature and his belief that understanding the past strengthens our connections to one another.

Above all else, Edward was a humble and generous man. He was always willing to help whether family, friends, or neighbors and never sought recognition for his kindness. His steady support and quiet guidance touched many lives.

Edward was the son of the late Donald and Roberta (Carr) Bowen. He was a devoted husband of 53 years to Arlene (Zastowsky), a loving father to Lynette and Andrew, and a proud “Papa” to his two cherished grandchildren, Katelyn and Christopher, who brought him great joy. His family was the center of his world, and his love for them was evident in all he did.

In addition to his immediate family, Edward leaves behind his sisters Joanne Bowen of Putnam, Connecticut; Nancy Gervasio of Lexington, Virginia; and Cheryl Parent of Foster, Rhode Island; and his brothers Donald “Teddy” Bowen of South Killingly, Connecticut, and Dennis Bowen of Attawaugan, Connecticut, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

Edward will be remembered for his service, his integrity, and the gentle way he showed up for others every day. His legacy lives on in the lives he protected, the history he preserved, and the family and community he loved so deeply.
