Obituary of Roland E. Chenail

Wauregan-Roland E. Chenail, 85, passed away at his home on November 8. He was the beloved husband of Georgette S. (Frechette) Chenail for 64 years. In addition to his wife, he leaves his daughter Cathleen A. and her husband Allen Johnson of Argyle, Texas, his daughter Susan L. Hawes of Moosup and her three children Nicholas, Andrew and Miranda, his son David R. and his wife Christine Chenail of Brooklyn and their two sons Devin and Daniel. Born June 30, 1925, in Wauregan, CT, he was the son of the late Emil A. and Albertine (Charland) Chenail. As a young man, Roland was employed at Elm Crest Farm, Wauregan Mills and also worked with his father delivering milk to homes in Moosup. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and he served on board the USS Elliot DMS4 in the waters off California and Oahu, Hawaii, working out of Pearl Harbor, the USS Curtis AV4 in the South Pacific area through the end of WWII and he spent Christmas 1945 on leave in Shanghai, China and later moved to Tokyo Bay for New Years 1946. Upon discharge in March 1946 he went back to work at Wauregan Mills and reunited with his childhood sweetheart. They were married at All Hallows Church in Moosup on August 10, 1946. Roland retired at 62 years of age as Safety Director from Pervel Industries in Plainfield, CT. He had been employed for 39 years and held many different positions within the company. Within his 23 years of retirement, he enjoyed working in the yard, travelling, going to the Bradley Theatre, attending learning in retirement classes at QVCC, going to the library and eating out at restaurants. He also served over 20 years as secretary for the Wauregan Fire District. He was a life member of the VFW in Plainfield, a member of the American Legion, and a member of the NRA. A memorial service will take place on Monday (November 15, 2010) at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 620 Wauregan Rd., Wauregan, CT, followed by Military Honors.
