Obituary of Shirley M. Benoit

Shirley M. Benoit, 86, of Putnam, died peacefully December 22nd, 2009 in Pascoag, RI. She was born February 3rd, 1923 in Hartford CT; daughter of Earnest L. and Martha (Todd) Day. She attended school in New England, graduating from Haverhill High School, Haverhill, MA in 1941. After she completed High School, Mrs. Benoit attended the Concord State Hospital School of Nursing in Concord, NH. She relocated to Putnam in 1942 and lived there her entire adult life. On May 30th, 1946 she was married to Louis Benoit Jr. of Putnam who died in 1970. She was the loving mother of Sharon Aubin and her husband Paul of Poultney, VT and Jeffrey L. Benoit and his wife Mary of Pomfret Center, CT; a granddaughter Ellen Farber (Palumbo), grandsons Ryan Benoit and Andrew Farber; a great grandson Devon Palumbo; a brother Wayne R. Day of Haverhill, MA. She and her husband enjoyed motorcycling and rode their Harley to Yellowstone Park on their honeymoon. In later years she enjoyed family camping trips in New England and Eastern Canada. For many years Mrs. Benoit worked in the food service industry, having worked at the Putnam Grammar School, Annhurst College, and Westcott Care, until her retirement in 1988. She was also an active member of the Congregational Church of Putnam where she had been a member for nearly 70 years. She faithfully served on many committees, and most recently enjoyed her Wednesday morning bible study group. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, December 29th, at 2:00 pm at the Putnam Congregational Church, 175 Main Street, Putnam with the Reverend Thomas Meyer officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial in the spring in Grove Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Mrs. Benoit's name, to the Putnam Congregational Church Restoration fund, PO Box 463, Putnam, CT.
