Obituary of Helen M. Marcy

Dayville, CT- Helen Marie (Ranta) Marcy formerly of West Woodstock passed away February 22, 2012 at Westview Nursing Care & Rehab Center in Dayville, CT. She was predeceased by her husband, Elton John Marcy who died in 1996. They lived in the Marcy farmhouse at Black Pond in West Woodstock for their 33 years of marriage. Helen was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd in West Woodstock. She was the daughter of Mathew and Lydia (Jokioho) Ranta and was born in Teaneck, NJ on May 4, 1920. In time the family moved to Eastford, CT and then to Bradford Corner Road in West Woodstock. She was predeceased by a brother, Carl Ranta in 1975 and a sister, Ruth Ranta in 2005. She leaves nieces and nephews and her dear friend Jane White of Eastford who faithfully continued to write Helen every week after Helen went to live at Westview in 2005. During her residency at Westview, Helen gained many new and special friends through the staff that cared for her. She graduated from Woodstock Academy in 1937 and soon thereafter, moved to New York City working 12 years for two doctors. Upon her father's death, she moved back home to West Woodstock to care for her mother. Helen worked in the office of the Parizek Company until her retirement. Helen is survived by her nieces, Fayme Newbold of Elgin, IL, Ruth (Sally) Gasek of Ellington, CT, Barbara Paige of Woodstock, CT, Geraldine Robinson of South Royalston, MA, and a nephew, Warren Marcy of South Royalston, MA. Through the years, she enjoyed many dear friendships. Helen liked to read, do puzzels, hooking wool rugs, meeting with her weekly bible study group, and sharing birthday luncheons with her friends. She also had a love for the English language and for words, enjoyed crossword puzzles and writing poetry. One of Helen's favorite poems was "Evangeline" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and she could say it from memory. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 1PM at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 12 Bradford Corner Road, West Woodstock, CT. Burial will be at 12:15 PM in Barlow Cemetery, Barlow Cemetery Road, West Woodstock, CT, prior to church service. Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, CT, have been entrusted with her arrangements.
