Obituary of Barbara S. Rich

Barbara "Granny" Rich Barbara "Granny" Rich, 104, of Pomfret died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at her home, born September 5, 1907 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of Joseph Schaefer and Maria Schmitt, wife of the late Samuel Rich, they were married December 29, 1938, he died in 1972. Barbara graduated from Willimantic Normal School in 1929. She taught 30 children in a one room schoolhouse in Plainfield for 12 years. She was a 4-H Leader and co-founder of the L & G Riding Club. For 12 years she was Selectman's Clerk for the Town of Pomfret, Secretary of the Abington Cemetery and taught Sunday School at the Abington Congregational Church. An avid gardener, she canned up to 100 years old. She loved horses and could be seen at many fairs and local horse shows watching her son and grandchildren. She leaves her son Chaplin Rich and his wife Linda of Pomfret, grandchildren Rebecca Rich of Pomfret, Sam Rich of Pomfret and a great grandson Wyatt. Funeral Service will be Friday, April 13, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. A calling hour will be from 1:00 PM to the start of the service. Burial will follow in Abington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Windham County 4-H Camp, 326 Taft Pond Road, Pomfret Center, CT 06259.
