Mr. Smith, you gave me a second chance in my life when nobody else gave me even one chance. With your loving concern I graduated in 1968. While I was in the Army I wrote to you a letter which you showed to my daughter 20 years later. You were my teacher, my football coach in freshman year and my principal. I will think of you often and thank you ALWAYS. May GOD Bless

Our deepest sympathies go out to you and your family Barbara! Dick was a special man! I was a senior in high school in 1965-1966 when he started as Assistant Principal at Killingly High. He was loved by all and always remembered at our class reunions! I hope you find comfort and peace from the love of family and friends around you.

Dear Barbara,
We were so sorry to hear of Richard's passing. After 62 years of marriage it will take time to get used to not seeing, and doing for him. We didn't know him very well but he was always friendly and funny in church. He had a great sense of humor. Every time you went to California he carried your picture in his pocket next to heart. He showed it to us on occasion and that made me say "He must really love her after all these years."
He's in a better place now and he can breath freely and have no pain.
God Bless you both,
Ken & Annette

I first met Dick when I started my career as a budding new School Psychologist at Killingly Junior High. He was such a kind and gentle man with a commanding presence that drew respect from all. The best advise he gave me was about how my roll was to help serve the teachers, as they are on the front lines of education every day. It was a creed he lived by, and he set a great example. He always found a way to make us laugh, even under tough circumstances, with that witty southern humor of his. He had an inner sense about people and knew how to give them what they needed. Sadly, he carried the loss of his daughter every day, but I like to think his memory of her kept him real and strong for the rest of us. He was never shy about how much he loved and missed her, and how much his wife and family meant to him. I am so very sorry for your loss.

My deep condolences to the Smith family, especially my high school friend and good buddy, Richard. Mr. Smith was the kind of man who left an indelible mark on one's life. He was a kind and gentle leader, who managed 1,000 unwieldy adolescents by commanding their respect - and he was worthy of it. He played an incredible important role in my high school years, and I will be forever grateful that he was a part of my journey. A leader among men, a man who made leaders out of many, rest in peace Mr. Smith.

Barb, Lisa, and Richard- So sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of Dick, mainly at Christmas Eve. Everyone sitting around the table drinking gram's spiked egg nog, sharing laughs, seems so long ago now. Those were great times. Thinking of you all. Much love, cousin Allison
