To Pam and other relatives of Phares Dukeshire: My mother (Carol Taber Hayes) and Phares (Captain Dukeshire) were first cousins and close friends through various phases of their lives. I came to know Phares through my mother (who died in 2012) over the past two to three decades. He and I shared the same birthday thirty years apart. Phares was a very dear and very gifted sailor and painter. Once with a family group I took the ferry that he still captained from New London to Orient Point. In the past several years, I became involved in typing and editing an account that he wrote of an incident that he experienced during World War II, when the ship he was on as second in command was torpedoed by a German U-boat. The crew survived and traveled on four lifeboats through the south Atlantic Ocean to Ascension Island; he was in charge of one of the lifeboats. Living in St. Paul, Minnesota, I was able to visit Phares last summer (July 2015). During that visit we reviewed his manuscript, and he told me numerous stories about his past, which I will always treasure. My sincere condolences go out to all the surviving members of his family, especially Pam. You have lost a very fine and irreplaceable man. I miss him very much myself.

My sincerest condolences to Capt. Dukeshire's immediate family. He was a Great Man to me ' A stable mentoring influence' if you will, that was mainly the reason that I chose a Career as a Merchant Mariner back in 1975 having gone to sea for the first time as an "Ordinary Seaman" bringing a Small ferry from San Juan Puerto Rico to New London Conn. Extremely gifted as a Capt., never afraid to show and teach anyone who would listen, always exuding great confidence and a "Lot Of Fun" to be around. He surely made a great impression on me. I'm now nearing the end of my career, having risen to the level of Chief Engineer, sailing all over the world with great experiences, and it all started back in 1975 on that trip from Puerto Rico with Capt. Dukeshire ,sorry to see him go, wishing him God Speed . Perhaps we'll meet again on the other side.....MD

So sorry for your loss. Jimmy worked with Capt. for years on the ferry and I worked in the ticket office and was a cook on the Plum Island , New London and Cape Henlopen. Capt. stories were the best. His style and humor were legendary at the ferry. He took at ride a few months ago and regaled the crew with his stories and observations. Truly a great and loved man. We are so glad to have worked with him. Jimmy and Lisa
