Obituary of Robert E. Sloat

Robert E. Sloat of Thompson, Connecticut, a teacher, administrator and chair of the arts faculty of Pomfret School, died at home on August 9, 2017, at the age of 76. After his retirement in 1976, Sloat remained active in the performing arts in northeastern Connecticut and was generous with his knowledge of the theater, particularly stage lighting. He directed and conducted productions at the Bradley Playhouse and served as a board member and technical director for P/Arts (formerly Opera New England of NE Connecticut). He also directed productions for Marianapolis Prep. 

Sloat was born in Rahway, New Jersey on February 7, 1941. His parents were Frederick P. and Edna Eastman Sloat from whom he inherited skills as a teacher, for mathematics and music, and learned the value of community engagement. He was a 1963 graduate of Wesleyan University and later received an M.Ed. from the University of Connecticut. He and Caroline Fuller were married on June 19, 1965 in Evanston, Illinois. He also leaves their daughter Elisabeth, her husband Marc Rothschild, and sons Henry, William, and Colin; their son Andrew and his partner Frampton Tolbert; as well as his sister-in-law, Sarah Fuller; and his niece and nephews, their spouses, and children. He has requested that friends wishing to make gifts in his memory contribute to the performing arts and suggested the programs at Pomfret School, the Bradley Playhouse, or Marianapolis Prep.
