David S. Leandro, 80, of Wauregan died Friday, March 14, 2014 with his family by his side at the W. Backus Hospital in Norwich. Beloved husband of Lucilia (Aguiar) Leandro, they were married April 8, 1957. He was born March 1, 1934 in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, son of the late Jose and Maria (Fernandes) Leandro. David was a Truck Driver in Azores before immigrating to Canada in 1964. He was a Gold Miner in Red Lake, Ontario until he moved to Wauregan in 1968, where he has been a Communicant of Sacred Heart Church. David was a Machine Operator for Anchor Glass Container in Killingly. He loved gardening and tending to his grape vines. David was an avid bird watcher and was a member of Grapo Amigos da Terceira, Inc. for the past 10 years. David was always willing to lend a helping hand. He leaves his wife Lucilia, his children Manuel Leandro and his wife Vickie of Jacksonville, FL, Maria Ponciano and her husband Jose of Brooklyn, CT, Robert Leandro and his wife Julie of Moosup, CT; his sister Conceicao Rosa of Pawtucket, RI; his brother Serafim Leandro of N. Providence, RI; grandchildren Derek Ponciano, Jessica Leandro, Kali Leandro, Amanda Ponciano, Nadia Ponciano, Paige Leandro, Erika Malito, Marina Medeiros of Azores, many godchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Manuel, John, Jose, Domingos and his sister Maria de Carmo. Funeral will be Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 9:00 AM from the Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds Street, Danielson, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 620 Wauregan Road, Wauregan, CT. Burial to follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Funeral Home. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the American Lung Association of Connecticut, 45 Ash Street, East Hartford, CT 06108.
