First of all... Happy Birthday, Grandma.
I can't believe I am writing this... It was only 3 years ago, when I 'Lit a candle for mom'..
My stomach sank when I saw your name on the top of the obituary section. My heart is heavy, and I wish I could be there right now with everyone... It's 1:11 a.m. over here, and your wake started an hour ago.
Over the past four days, lots of memories have been pouring through my mind/heart... I thought about how you used to wear bright pink lipstick, and set your hair. I remember when I was little, you used to let me try on the lipstick. There's even a picture of it floating around somewhere. I also remember going to your house next door, nearly every day - growing up. Sharing some fig newtons with you at the kitchen table... I remember when I was little, I used to play songs on my boom box, and sing and dance along in the kitchen, while you humored me, as my audience... and how you used to tell me I should be a country singer when I grew up. Well, I'm grown-up now - and I'm sorry, I still don't like country music very much. ;-)
I remember how special it was, staying up late, and watching unsolved mysteries with you in your room, or even just watching QVC, and seeing what kind of whacky product they came out with next.
I also remember family holidays, and Thanksgiving - while uncle Peter and the other guys sat in front of the TV (yelling at the football players to 'Pay Attention!') ..and Christmas at your house... I remember grandpa's mashed potatoes, and the peas in the silver can (I still love those best). Thank you for always listening, no matter how mundane my story...and for all the afternoon snacks. I miss you already. I bet you're keeping mom company now... I love you.
Love always,
Kristen
