Obituary of Lois B. Thompson
Lois Bixby Thompson, 86, of Thompson Road, Thompson, CT died, Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Matulaitis Nursing Home in Putnam. She was born March 14, 1926 in Worcester, MA, daughter of the late Raymond and Elsie (Perkins) Bixby. She was a 1944 graduate of the High School of Commerce in Worcester, MA and in 1948 a graduate of Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing.
Lois worked as an RN at Worcester City Hospital in Worcester, MA, George Washington University in Washington, DC, and at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT. She also worked as an RN at Worcester Boys Club Camp in Sterling, MA for five years and at the Putnam Visiting Nurses Association for four years. She worked at the John Dempsey Regional Center for the Department of Mental Retardation in Putnam for twenty-one years as the Director of Residential Programs, retiring in 1989. While there she was voted Citizen of the year in 1978 for her work with the mentally retarded and coordinating trips each year for her clients to have vacations to different places such as Disney World and Washington, D.C.
Lois lived in Thompson since 1962, a member of the Thompson Congregational Church, a member of the Thimble Club, belongs to the City of Worcester City Hospital Alumni Association, Brooklyn Bird Club, Audubon Society, a Volunteer at Dempsey Center and Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. She joined Learning in Retirement when it came to this area.
She leaves her Son David Clark Thompson and his wife Anne of Ewing, NJ, her grandson Eric MacKenzie Thompson of Boston, MA, two step-grandchildren Heidi and Cody Buck, and three nephews Dana, Daniel, and Duane Bixby and their families of NC. She was predeceased by her brother Bruce E. Bixby. She also leaves many, many friends including Sally Kneeland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thompson Congregational Church. They will distribute it to local needs.
The Funeral will be November 3, 2012 at 11:00 am in the Thompson Congregational Church, 347 Thompson Road, Thompson, CT. Burial will be private in East Thompson Cemetery. To share a memory with her family "Light a Candle" at www.smithandwalkerfh.com
