I will miss Al's voice and spirit on the airwaves, he was a true presence with the music and the people who make it. He lived the blues so fully in so many ways, on the air and in life!
I was honored to have him join the radio family at WHUS when I was there and see him serve so well for many years, thorough thick and thin. It was great to see his commitment extend to programs on WECS at Eastern as well. A true RADIO DUDE!
Rest in peace Al, keep ramblin' and give my regards to Ramblin' Richard Miller when you see him. You guys have a special place to share in our hearts always.
My best wishes to your family for peace and healing and saving all the wonderful memories. Keep the faith!

Not everyone achieves the status of legendary within their lifetime. Al did.
And he became a legend in at least two of his passions, auto racing and radio. I only knew him through radio where he was quite professional, quite committed and quite conscientious. he was a very generous person who was only too happy to share advice, encouragement, airtime, and anything else he thought you needed. he was willing and eager to use his syndicated radio program to promote local musicians, whether they played blues or most any other genre. you nonly had to ask and he was gracious. he was a very accomplished person who was well spoken on a surprising range of topics. I'll sure miss him as will so many other musicians, listeners, and colleagues.

12 Bars for Ramblin’ Bert Will Never Die
Ramblin’ Bert Will Never Die.
One of my proudest moments was when I won a CD from Ramblin’ Bert. I was listening to his blues show on WECS, the radio Station of Eastern Connecticut State University, and he had a contest. First caller to identify the song wins the CD. I called and won. WOW! He signed it for me and it sits proudly in my music collection. Ramblin’ Burt Cournoyer was a Blues connoisseur. He could feel the sound, and he could share that feeling with us. Now he’s sharing a mighty bass line with the heavenly choir.
Born Alfred Bertram Cournoyer, in Webster, Massachusetts on December 29, 1938 he used a shortened form of his middle name as part of his radio handle. We lost him on October 25, 2014.
He had an encyclopedic knowledge of Blues, from early roots music to contemporary, up and coming acts. He was active in the Connect music scene and the Connecticut radio world. It helps to understand the Blues if you live near a river. He started spinning sounds on WECS in the late 1980s. Ramblin’ Burt would listen to blues anywhere and he’d talk about them to anywhere: bars, festivals, concerts, and even Elks Club talent nights.
He was a stop on the blues circuit and everyone wanted to be interviewed by Ramblin’ Burt. He had a gravelly voice and a Northern Connecticut Border accent that just went perfectly with the music he played.
J. Z. Zatowski of WECS tells us that he was instrumental in developing the blues library at the station. “The Blues will be a little bit bluer without Ramblin’ Burt,” said Zatowski. The Connecticut Blues community shares the sense of loss that must be felt by his family. His life enriched us all. There’s something about the Blues, something about rivers, and something about Ramblin’ Bert; they just keep on rollin’.

The music community in Northeastern Connecticut will miss "Ramblin' Bert". I have known Al for many years and appreciated the support he gave to the Bean (aka The Vanilla Bean Café) in Pomfret. It was always a pleasure to welcome him to the many shows he attended. He will be missed, my condolences to the family.

I have SO many wonderful memories of "Bert"...I don't know where to start. He was a huge supporter of music...the blues music scene in particular! Whenever my band had a gig, he'd pump it up on his radio shows and came to see us as often as he could. As a matter of fact, the last time I saw him, I was singing at Cady's Tavern w/Johnny Watson, Jr. as a guest performer. Everybody in the band was so happy to see him there. They knew that no matter who was there, there was a least one person who was lovin' the music...that was "RAMBLIN' BERT!" R.I.P., dear friend!

The Last staff meeting I sat near Bert and exchanged a few words. He said he was taking a break from WHUS without a program, which was usually Bluesline. I was impressed that he still attended the staff meeting. He took his radio seriously. God Bless and Rest In Peace.

Al was a radio mentor of mine and a great guy that I speak of often, still, when I train new folks in the radio land. I enjoyed his album reviews for the insight, and his kindness as a friend. You'll be missed Ramblin' Bert. - G
