Obituary of Robert A. Griggs
Robert A. Griggs, age 69, of Abington section of Pomfret, died February 14, 2005 at Kimberly Hall in Windsor.
He was born in Putnam, April 25, 1936, son of the late Clarence and Laurie [Beeney] Griggs.
He attended local schools in Pomfret, Brooklyn and Killingly and received his B.A. from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1986, majoring in Psychology. He was employed for 30 years by the Southern New England Telephone Company. He retired in 1989, spending many of his winters in Arizona hunting, fishing and panning for gold. Mr. Griggs served his country during the Korean War from 1953 to 1956 in the U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to the 2nd Marine Air Wing at Cherry Point, North Carolina; Mr. Griggs was a long time member of the Putnam Fish and Game Club, an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also very active for many years with Parents Without Partners, a support group for divorced and widowed families.
He is survived by a son, Stephen Griggs, of Phoenix, Arizona; four daughters: Lynda Leighton of Rochester, New Hampshire; Lisa Slagle of Dudley, Mass; Lori Gjika of Phoenix, Arizona; and Leslie Griggs of Pomfret; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, several cousins and one aunt, Gladys Griggs of East Putnam.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM in the Abington Congregational Church, Hampton Road, Abington, CT. Calling Hours Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Burial will be in the spring in Abington Cemetery with Military Honors.
