Obituary of Lawrence U. Phaneuf, Jr.

Larry Phaneuf, 74 of Church Street, Putnam, died Sunday at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was the beloved husband of Janet (OBrien) Phaneuf; they were married October 27, 1956 in ST Mary Church. He was born in Putnam, son of the late Lawrence U. and Alice (LeClaire) Phaneuf, Sr. Larry spent his youth growing up in South Woodstock, a 1949 graduate of the Woodstock Academy, moving to Putnam in 1956. He was a communicant of ST Mary Church of the Visitation in Putnam. Larry was a Contractor specializing in plumbing, excavating and grave digging and at one time operated service stations in Putnam. Larry also was the head plumber at the Woodstock Fair Grounds for over 30 years. He was a member of the Connecticut National Guard and served 18 months with the U S Army in Germany during the Korean War. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. Larry enjoyed gardening, growing Dahlias and tomatoes. Larry owned, restored and raced a 1936 Midget Racer. He and his wife were members of the Atlantic Coast Old Timers Auto Racing Club, traveling throughout New England, New York and Pennsylvania. Larry was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching racing. He leaves in addition to his wife a daughter: Susan Phaneuf and her husband Michael Chrzan of Putnam; two brothers: Richard Phaneuf and his wife Elizabeth of Woodstock; Bernard Phaneuf and his wife Janice of Putnam, a sister: Constance Black and her husband James of East Hartford, a sister-in-law: Esther Phaneuf of Woodstock; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother: Robert Phaneuf in 1998. Family and Friends may call Saturday January 21st from 10:00 to 12:00 Noon at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 PM in ST Mary Church of The Visitation, 218 Providence Street, Putnam.
