Obituary of Walter H. Ellsworth

Walter Haven Ellsworth, age 90, of Abington, passed away peacefully Monday evening, May 1, 2006,at the Village Manor in Plainfield after an extended illness. Walter was born August 11, 1915 in New Haven, CT, son of the late Howard S. Ellsworth, Sr. and Thera Howe Ellsworth. Walter, Walt, served his country in World War II and the Korean War. He was Chief Petty Officer in the Navy Seabees, landing with the Marine Corps on Iwo Jima and witnessed the raising of the American flag atop Mt. Surabachi. Walt was a member of the VFW in Danielson and Putnam. By trade he was a refrigerator man and an electrician. He worked for Pan American Airlines among other companies on Antigua, Grand Camen Island, the Grand Bahamas and in Brazil. He also was on a tracking station in 1969 of the first lunar landing of mankind. He lived in Gainesville, FL, California and in Las Vegas, NV before returning to live with his mother in Pomfret. He owned and operated a Kelvenator appliance store in Abington as well as servicing refrigerator units in stores, restaurants and farms in the surrounding area. He loved animals especially his dog Gypsy who is now being cared for by a good neighbor. He leaves his four brothers, Edward Ellsworth of Woodstock; Harold Ellsworth and wife Helen of Venice, FL; Howard Ellsworth and wife Christa of Albuquerque, NM; Robert Ellsworth and wife Emma of Pomfret, a sister, Marion Scott of Pomfret; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his late wives, the former Helen Davis and Mildred Hamilton and her daughter Jeanne. Calling Hours will be from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Friday, May 5, 2006 at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. A Graveside service will be 10:00 am Saturday May 6, 2006 at South Cemetery in Pomfret. In lieu of flowers donations may be given in his memory to the Pomfret Fire Department, PO Box 67, Pomfret Center, CT 06259 or to the Abington Congregational Church, PO Box 289, Pomfret Center, CT 06259.
