Obituary of A. Gordon Sherman

A. Gordon Sherman, age 86 of Sabin St, Putnam, formerly of Killingly Avenue, died Sunday evening at the Haven Health Care in Danielson. He was the beloved husband of Avis (Lehrer) Sherman, they were married May 7, 1944. He was born February 18, 1920 in Putnam, son of Walter and Kate (Balloch) Sherman. Gordon was an Army Veteran of WWII serving in the Company B 29th Engineer Battalion as a Draftsman Topographic, he was awarded the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, American Theater campaign ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was honorably discharged February 25, 1946. He was a Textile Designer working 25 years for the Putnam Woolen Company, after the closing of the company he worked for the Uxbridge Worsted, Valley Textile and retired in 1985 from Stevens Linens. He operated Sherman Fabrics in downtown Putnam and later at his home. He was a member of the Congregational Church of Putnam, serving as a Deacon and Trustee. A member of the former Tri State Coin Club, the Putnam Travelers and the Putnam VFW. He leaves his wife Avis; children, Mary Louise Chabot of Webster; Scott Gordon Sherman of Putnam; grandchildren, Jennifer Sherman of Putnam; Erica Chabot of Webster; Steven Sevigny. Jr. of Florida; and a great granddaughter. He was predeceased by his siblings: Russell; Rainsford: Roy; Pauline and Louise. Calling Hours Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. The Funeral Service will be Thursday at 11:00 AM in the Congregational Church of Putnam, 175 Main St, Putnam. Burial with Military Honors in High Street Cemetery, Dayville.
