Obituary of Loreita M. Jackson

Loreita Miller Jackson 93, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday November 15, 2006, at the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home, in Brooklyn, Connecticut, where she has made her home since 1997. She was born Loreita Miller Brown on October 8, 1913, in Obion, Tennessee. As a child she lived in Toledo, Ohio, Elsinore, California, and Riverside, California. She was a Miss Southern California State Fair and had some bit -parts in some Hollywood movies. Loreita married Lyle Laverne Jackson (1909-1985) in 1931, and moved east with him. She made her home most of her adult life in either Sayre or East Athens, Pennsylvania. Loreita worked at the Robert Packer Hospital, where she became the chief medical record librarian for several years. In 1961 she accepted the position as Director of the Tioga Point Museum, in Athens. In that capacity she helped launch the Stephen Foster Festivals. She held the museum post until 1992, when her health necessitated retirement. Unable to live alone any longer, she moved to the home of her son on the campus of Pomfret School, in Pomfret, Connecticut. Loreita was a Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, and had been very active in the D.A.R. She was a very active rock and mineral collector and a life-member of the Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club, and had served as a Den Mother for the Athens Cub Pack. Loreita had traveled throughout North America, Europe, and North-West Africa. She was a devout Christian and a member of the Athens United Methodist Church. She leaves her son: David B. Jackson and his wife Judith of Concord, MA, and a granddaughter: Rebecca Ruth Williams and her husband Shane of Mooresville, Indiana. A Memorial Service will be held in the spring at the Athens United Methodist Church. Private burial was in Tioga Point Cemetery.Donations may be made in her memory to the charity of ones choice.
