Dear Bates Family,
I wish to extend my most sincere condolences to you on the passing of Lou. I met Lou as a new basketball official four years ago while officiating youth games. He was very generous with his praise of me and also with his constructive comments. He offered me many tips and was a great partner on the court. I know by some of the stories he shared with me that he was highly regarded in our area as an official. I hope that your knowing of the respect and admiration he had from his associates in officiating will help you through this difficult time and lessen your grief as time goes on. I'll pray for his eternal reward for living a good life while he was with us.
Peace Be With You,
Bill Loftus

Romeo A. Blackmar posted a condolence
Dear Bates Family,
As a fellow umpire, basketball official and "student" of Lou's (he was my baseball mentor on The Eastern Board of Approved Umpires) I am truly sorry for your loss. Lou was such a caring and hard working individual. He taught me a lot about how to be a good baseball umpire. And last year when I started out as a basketball official I can still hear what Lou said to me after we did a game together at Pomfret Community School. He said, Romeo I made an umpire out of you, now let's see if we can make a basketball official out of you as well. I will always carry those words with me onto the basketball court and the baseball diamond forever. I will miss Lou's great affection for the games he officiated. I know that you are saddened by his passing, but each and every day I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts hoping that you are comforted by the care and love of a kind and generous God who has taken Lou to be home with Him forever. May that same loving God embrace you in His arms and carry you through the days ahead.

I will never foget uncle Louis and how much he loved to officiat and ump games. I remember playing a senior league game where he was the 1st/2nd base ump. We where playing Shawns team an I had gotten a single. Not being the most fleet of foot (180 pounds and I ran a 8 second fourty yard dash)I thought I might get a faverable call from my uncle if I stole 2nd. As the ball left the pitchers hand I made my break for 2nd I was a real close play (I thought I was safe). When he made the out call he said That I looked up at him and said " come on Uncle Louis". He never let me forget that game and the true sports man he was. Our thoughts and prayers our with all of you.

Elaine:
From many years ago while bagging groceries at Gerardi's Super Market while you worked the register; to when I first met Lou, we all shared many happy times. Lou and I went on to share some personal and extremely funny golf stories that we often reminisced about when we were off in a corner somewhere. Although this time is sad for all of us, you and your family are the ones that have shared and captured these precious moments with Lou. You will always have them. Cherish them and use them as strength. You know Lou would want that.
God Bless you all.

I have known Louis since the 5th grade in the little three room school house in Thompson. He was with me as a Boy Scout in Troop 66, Thompson. He could smack a baseball further than any body and was a great 1st baseman. He always excelled in all his endeavers and a prince of a guy as evidenced by his civic service. As a brother Elk, Louis will never be forgotten, never forsaken. The void he leaves will be difficult to fill. His mentors in his early years would be justly proud.

We lost a great person Thursday night. Louie was a great man. Unfortunately I only knew him for a few years, but I am thankful for the memories I have of him. Louie was one of the nicest men I have ever came across. I will miss seeing him on the baseball diamond umpiring games. The last time I saw him was in May. He was going to umpire a game I was coaching in, but it was pouring rain. I sat in the dugout with him and Joe C. and listened to stories about him throwing guys out of games. God bless you Louie. I will miss you.

TO: Elaine, Shawn, Kyle and Stacey.
I was so saddened to hear of Louie's passing. I had the fortunate experience to referee with Louie approximately 1-1/2 weeks prior to his attack while working a scrimmage at Marianapolis. Shawn's display of courage providing emergency medical care for his father was extraordinary. He spoke proudly that his son Shawn had joined Eastern Board 8 basketball officials. He was so pround that he was going to mentor Shawn and work hard to develop Shawn's skills. Louie also spoke of how happy he was to be rated as a fully varsity level official. He was so much looking forward to officiating this season. I know that Louie is now working the biggest of all games and that his experience will be perfect and everlasting.
Louie was a good friend and an extra special person. I will miss Louie very much.
My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Bates family during this time of significant loss. May God keep you all safe and healthy always.
