Obituary of Stuart W. Franklin

Stuart W. Franklin, 90, of Walnut Road, Putnam, died suddenly on Thursday, June 14, at Day Kimball Hospital. He was born in Putnam on June 18, 1916, the son of the late Charles F. and Grace (Hayden) Franklin, and had been a lifelong resident of Putnam. Stuart was the husband of Isabel (Ukleja) Franklin who survives him. Stuart was an Army Veteran of WWII, serving as a Staff Sergeant in the European Theatre, awarded four Battle Stars, a Presidential Unit Citation, the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged. Stuart was a member of VFW Post 1523, a life member of Putnam Lodge of Elks 574, an avid trout fly fisherman and golfer. He was a member of the former Putnam Country Club on Park St., a former member and Club Champion of Raceway Golf Course in Thompson, and a long time member and past President of Quinnatisset Country Club in Thompson. Stuart was a 75 year member of the Putnam Congregational Church, having joined in 1932 and serving in the past as auditor and a member of the Board of Trustees. Stuart had worked many years as the general manager of Rawley Plumbing Supply and continued in that capacity for five additional years when the business was purchased by Central Supply of Worcester Mass. Stuart retired in 1977. Stuart leaves a son, Stanley Franklin and his wife Janice of Foster R.I., a daughter Elisabeth Thompson and her husband Robert, of Putnam. Stuart leaves five grandchildren, Nathan Thompson, Seth Thompson, Jessica Vergoni, Joshua Franklin, Lindsey Franklin and three great-grandchildren, Hannah Thompson, Caleb Thompson, Isabel Vergoni, five nieces and four nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Hayden B Franklin, Frederick Franklin, and one nephew, Richard Franklin. Calling hour will be Monday, June 18th from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, with a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM.
