Mary S. Child, 89 of Liberty Highway, Putnam, died August 7, 2007 after a lengthy bout with Parkinson’s disease. She was born December 1, 1917 in Belaire, Ohio, daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Polivka) Sochor. In September 1924 she moved to Connecticut. Mary graduated in 1939 from Willimantic State Teacher’s College (now Eastern Connecticut State University) with a Bachelor in Education degree. Her first teaching job was at a one-room school on Silver Street in Coventry, CT. After teaching in the rural school for 3 years (1939 to 1942) she accepted a job teaching grades 5 and 6 in 1942 to 1943 at Thompson Hill in Thompson, CT. In 1943 she married Donald Ezra Child of Putnam. They relocated to Cambridge, MA. While there she taught during 1943 to 1944 in Dedham, MA, a suburb of Boston. Moving back to Putnam in 1944 she taught fifth grade for 20 years. Mary continued her education at the University of Connecticut receiving her Master of Arts degree and a Sixth Year Certificate in Reading. She became a Reading Specialist, in Putnam, a job she held until her retirement in 1983. She had completed 44 years in the field of Education. Mary was a member of the Lambda Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, international honorary sorority for Women Educators. In her younger years Mary was an accomplished tennis player and a formidable opponent on the court. She also had a flair for interior decorating, especially in the colonial and early American décor. She is survived by her sister: Barbara J. Sochor of Storrs; also many cousins and friends, her cat Ashley, and caregiver Galyna. She was predeceased by her husband Donald in 1988 and by brothers: Frank Sochor in 1924 and Richard L. Sochor in 2005. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched. There are no services; interment will be in Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Putnam Public Library, 225 Kennedy Drive, Putnam, CT 06260.
