Obituary of Alice Gascoigne Johnson
Alice Gascoigne Johnson, 81, of Danielson, CT died Friday, March 12, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born April 9, 1939 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, daughter of the late H. Thomas and Myrtle (Carr) Southwood. She was the beloved wife of her late first husband Ransom M. Gascoigne II and her late second husband Henry (Hank) Johnson.
Alice was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother who selflessly provided love, support and nurturing to family, friends and anyone in need. She shared her love of baking and preparing special meals with her children and grandchildren, especially around the holidays. Making jams from fresh fruit was one of her specialties that has become a family tradition.
Alice was a very active and dedicated parishioner of Trinity Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, CT for over 30 years. She was the founding Directress of the Guild of St Francis (healing ministries), member of the Vestry, Altar Guild, Lay Reader and Sunday School Teacher. Alice volunteered extensively in her community. She was active in hospice, Caring Families and volunteered her home for battered woman. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, quiltmaking, canning and making clothes for her children.
Alice earned her Nursing Diploma at St. Catherine’s in Montreal. She worked in the Newborn Nursery and Operating Room at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT. She also worked for Dr. Richard Schneider’s Asthma and Allergy Practice in Putnam, CT before her retirement.
She leaves her daughters, Carol Albertelli and her husband Michael of Williston, VT, Deborah Gascoigne of North Oxford, MA; sister Jane Kipp and husband John of Morgan, VT; grandchildren, Brian, Christine and Lindsey Albertelli; Samantha, Luke and Lily Pashoian, William Vessels, great grandson Liam Vessels and step-children David, Reid and Julie Johnson, several nieces and nephews.
Alice was predeceased by her daughter Judith S. Pashoian,first husband Ransom M. Gascoigne II and her second husband Dr. Henry (Hank) Johnson.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 16, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, CT. Burial will be private in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Southbridge, MA. Memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Trinity Episcopal Church, PO Box 276, Brooklyn, CT 06234.
