Obituary of Cynthia Braaten

Mrs. Cynthia Jean Braaten (West) went to be with her Lord Jesus peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving husband Ronn and family February 22,2022.

Cindy was born in Salinas, CA, to William and Jean (Kibbe) West, April 27, 1944. During her childhood they moved around the country, finally settling in Brooklyn, CT in 1955 after the death of her father when she was 10 yrs. old. In 1962, she graduated Killingly High School. In her junior year she was crowned prom queen and senior year voted Best Looking in the class. She also attended Thames Valley Technical College studying Mechanical Engineering.

Throughout her lifetime, she worked at Sears, Pomfret School Administration, Killingly Superintendent's Office, but I think the most fun position was being a carhop skating waitress at A & W.  She also was elected president of the NE CT Art Guild.

On October 9, 1992 she married Ronald Jens Braaten. Together they moved to "The Hill" where they built a beautiful home that entertained many family and friends celebrations. Their love for traveling brought them to Arizona and Cancun, Mexico. They both enjoyed the yearly long term stays playing tour guide to all who visited. The staff at their Cancun destination will forever be remember through the many portaits she painted of them. When at the homestead, you could find her either gardening, sitting at her desk in the art room painting, watching the birds or planning for the next party to gather family and friends in fellowship.

Above all, her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She shared with them New Year's parties, painting pottery in Mexico, getting their first American Girl Doll starting with Bitty Baby, working on paint projects and baking cookies at Christmas time are among many fun times.  She continually sponsored a child from Africa through Compassion International.

Mom will be lovingly remembered by her beloved husband Ronald Jens Braaten; sister Pamela Kaurenan; sister-in-law Jean West; children and their spouses, Christine Chenail, Kelly and James Rivers, Sharon and Jay Korsu, Matthew and Kitty Braaten, Jonathan Braaten, Laura and Raegan Spitler, Jason and Olivia Braaten; grandchildren, Katherine, Keenan, Grace, Isaac, Devin, Daniel, Noah, Hali, Emma, Nora, Arkin, Iver, Oscar, Ingrid and Dagny; God-children, Sherri Vogt and Amy Curtis. She was predeceased by her parents William A. and Jean West, brother William E. West.

Calling hours will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2022 at the Gagnon & Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds Street, Danielson, CT 06239. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon with viewing prior at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Eastford Baptist Church, 133 Union Road, Eastford, CT 06242. All are invited to stay for a luncheon reception after the service.
