Obituary of Angela O. Simmons

Angela O. Simmons, 97, of the Creamery Brook Retirement Village, Brooklyn, CT. formerly of East Killingly, CT. and Putnam, CT. died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam, CT. following a brief illness. Angela was the beloved wife of William B. Simmons for 68 years before he passed away in July 2003. Angela and William were married in 1935 and they had three sons. She was the oldest daughter of eight children born to the late Miguel and Esther Ordorica (Parades). She is survived by her sister Esther Schibilia of Hackettstown, N.J. Angela was born in Mexico City, Mexico on July 9, 1910. She graduated as a registered nurse from Middlesex General Hospital, New Brunswick, New Jersey. She served as the Putnam School Nurse from 1949 until 1976. As the Town of Putnam School Nurse she offered health care to all children attending Israel Putnam School, Putnam Grammar School, Putnam High School and Saint Mary's School. Throughout her life she always seemed to remember the names and faces of many of the children who were under her care. Angela was also very active with the Putnam Visiting Nurses Association during the 1950's and 1960's where she served in numerous administrative capacities. During the 1950's Angela conducted the child enumeration for the Putnam School system. Many may recall her old black 1948 Oldsmobile parked in the neighbor while she went door-to-door to tabulate the Putnam child census. Following her retirement in 1976, she and her husband Bill enjoyed traveling and they managed to circumnavigate the globe, on sea-going vessels, numerous times having visited well over 60 countries in their travels. Angela leaves two sons, William M. Simmons of Thompson, CT. and Edward J. Simmons of Mexico City, Mexico; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, James E. Simmons, in May 2003. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, March 28, 2008, at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove, St., Putnam, CT. Burial will follow this service at Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in her memory, to the Deary Memorial Road Race or Day Kimball Home Makers, both in care of Day Kimball Hospital, P.O. Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260.
