Obituary of Clara (Claire) Wheeler

Clara (Claire) Wainwright Scott Wheeler, 88, of Davis Road, Woodstock. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2008. Claire was born East Lyme, to Wilfrid and Ruth (Bruce) Scott on August 12, 1919. After high school at Williams Memorial Institute in New London, Claire graduated from the Home Memorial Hospital Nursing School in New London. She worked as a nurse until she married Edwin Booth Wheeler in East Lyme on September 26, 1942. Claire and Booth settled and raised 5 children. She was a devoted mother and an active member in her church, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School. She has made her home in Woodstock since 1989, and lived 22 years in Phoenix, AZ. Claire is survived by 5 children: Thomas Wheeler and his wife Jane of Kissimmee, FL; Irene Wheeler of Woodstock; Daniel Wheeler of East Lyme; Louise LaMee of Phoenix AZ; Barbara Little and her husband Timothy of Flagstaff, AZ; grandchildren: Lisa Maxwell and husband George; Thomas Wheeler, III; Deborah LaMee-Killebrew and her husband Kyle; Jonathan S. LaMee; Katherine E. LaMee and David A. Little; great grandchildren: Felicity and George Maxwell, siblings: Esther Scott Duffy of Waterford, Rev. Allen Scott of Waterford; Marjorie Welch and husband Floyd of East Lyme; John William Bruce Scott of East Lyme; nieces and nephews: Robert Duffy; Margaret Watson; Mackenzie Scott; Allen- Bruce Scott; Jonathan Scott; Linda Scott; Rachel Scott; Sharon Mayer; Janet Welch; Pam Beck; Craig Welch; Brian Welch and Laurie Broglio. She shared her loving spirit freely with her family and friends. God received another angel today. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 24 Child Hill Road, Woodstock. Burial in Wheeler Cemetery, North Stonington. Calling hours Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith & Walker Funeral, Home 148 Grove Street, Putnam.
