Obituary of Esther I. Fabian

Esther Irene Chism Fabian, 88, of Eastford, died Wednesday at her home. She was the wife of the late Alexander Frank Fabian they were married March 31, 1941, he died in 2000. She was born March 21, 1920 daughter of the late Frederick and Edna (Baker) Chism. She was a graduate of the Windham High School and attended Willimantic State Teachers College. She worked at the American Optical in Southbridge MA as a lab tech. With her husband they owned and operated Al's Shell Gas and Country Store in Phoenixville for several years. She then went to work at the Haven Nursing Home in Abington, from there she went to work at UCONN as a lab tech in the animal disease and life sciences labs until she retired in 1986. Esther spent her years living between Ashford and Eastford until she moved in with her son on Crystal Pond in Eastford, where she enjoyed many years of serene comfort. Esther was involved in many activities throughout her life including 4-H, where she won many awards for her baby beef. She also was a member of the Ashford Grange, Eastford Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. The Eastern Star and the D.A.R. She was a direct descendant of Capt. Thomas Larson, one of the earlier settlers of this country. She leaves her son Thomas J. Fabian and his wife Sandra and their son Nathaniel with whom she made her home. She leaves five other grandchildren Douglas Fabian, Holly Schmitz, Paula Salvas, Norma Fabian and Nancy Butts nine great grandchildren, Peter, Aaron, and Ty Fabian, Mary Schmitz, Matthieu and Heather Butts, Rachel and Sierra Butts and Kyle Brennan, two daughters-in-law, Bernice Fabian and Wanda Fabian. She was predeceased by two sons, Richard E. Fabian, Alexander F. Fabian, Jr., a sister Mildred C. Barrett and a brother Carl Chism. Calling Hours will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Burial will be Private in Grove cemetery in Eastford.
