Obituary of Grace Johanna Hughes
BRIDGEPORT - Grace Johanna Hughes, 89, died on October 2, 2008, at Matulaitis Nursing Home in Putnam, Connecticut surrounded by her loving family. Grace was born March 4, 1919 to John and Mary Liotard Hughes.
She lived at 134 Arcadia Avenue for almost her entire life until relocating to Webster, Massachusetts to be near her family. She enjoyed over two years in assisted living at Christopher Heights of Webster.
She was predeceased by her brother, John L. Hughes of West Hartford, and her sister, Dorothy Rose St. Onge of Putnam, Connecticut. She is survived by seven nieces and one nephew: Joanne and Barry Royce of Matawan New Jersey; Judi Hughes Holland of Tampa Florida, and Joy and Tony Rinaldi of Wethersfield, Connecticut; Bill and Jane St. Onge of Putnam, Connecticut, Mary St. Onge and Peter Garrison of Goshen, NY, Suzanne St. Onge of Thompson, Connecticut and Connie and David Post of Middletown Connecticut and Anne St. Onge of Thompson, Connecticut, as well as her beloved cousins Janice and Philip Fracassini and family of Fairfield.
Grace graduated from Albertus Magnus College at age 20 and later received her Masters Degree from Columbia University. She taught languages, primarily Spanish at Bassick High School, for over forty years, retiring in 1986. Grace traveled extensively and read voraciously. She also enjoyed the Boston Red Sox and her bridge group but her greatest loves were her students, her church and her family.
The funeral will be Monday at 9:15 AM from the Larson Funeral Home, 2496 North Avenue, Bridgeport followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in ST Peters Roman Catholic Church, Bridgeport. Calling hours Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Funeral Home. Burial in ST Michael's Cemetery, Stratford. Her family would like to thank the enormously kind and dedicated staff at Matulaitis Nursing Home.
