Obituary of Camille A. Guertin
Camille A. Guertin, 87, of Smith Road, Woodstock, CT died Wednesday at the Kindred Hospital in Leicester, MA. He was the beloved husband of 62 years of Margaretha "Greta" (Bennett) Guertin. Born February 25, 1921 in Putnam, son of the late Joseph and Emma Dupre Guertin.
He was Production Supervisor at American Standard in Plainfield, working for over 21 years, he retired in 1982. He also worked at the Putnam Woolen Mill, and worked as a carpenter for local contractors. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the US Marines; he participated in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands operations and participated in the occupation of Kyushu, Japan. He received an honorable discharge April 8, 1946. Camille made his home in Putnam most of his life, moving to Woodstock twenty five years ago. He was a former member of the Putnam Fire Department, a former Putnam Ambulance driver. He was a member of the Woodstock Senior Citizens, an avid bowler, enjoyed playing the organ, fishing and hunting. He was a founding member of the Putnam Little League in the late 1940's. He served as the leagues first player agent. He was known to many as Camille "Slaughter" Guertin. He always found time to serve as a manager, official scorer and umpire. He was the Putnam Little League Umpire-in-chief for more than 10 of the 15 years he devoted to the league. After moving to Woodstock at the age of 78 you could still find "Slaughter" umpiring a Game for the Woodstock Little League where his grandchildren played. In the 1930's and early 40's he was one of the original members of the Putnam Hawks, playing as catcher.
He leaves his wife Margaretha "Greta"; a daughter Joan Mayo of Woodstock; grandchildren: JoAnn Aldrich; Paul Mayo; Cynthia Mayo; great grandchildren: Donald, Erica and William Rutledge; Kyle Aldrich and his fiance Sara Cohen, Nathan Aldrich all of Woodstock; four great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, burial following in Barlow Cemetery. A calling hour will be Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home.
