Obituary of Lois Evelyn McCarthy
Lois Evelyn McCarthy, 91, of Pomfret, died Saturday at the Westview Health Care Center in Dayville. She was the wife of the late William J. McCarthy, they were married in 1938, he died in 1988. She was born May 21, 1917 in Colrain, MA, daughter of the late John and Jennie (Flye) Bettencourt.
She was a graduate of the Putnam High School Class of 1935. She came to Pomfret at the age of eleven. She was an active member of the Abington Congregational Church and a member of the Women Guild of the Church. She was a charter member of the Betty Putnam Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she had served as matron. She was also a charter member of the Wolf Den Grange were she was active for many years. Lois enjoyed knitting, sewing, baking and enjoyed time with family and friends.
She leaves two daughters: Nancy Dougherty and her husband James of Pomfret Center; Joyce Brigham and her husband Ernest of Coventry, a sister: Ruth Hansen of Stoughton, MA; grandchildren: Megan Toal of Channel Island, Jersey, UK; James P. Dougherty of Seattle, WA; Chad Brigham of Holland, MA; Jamie Brigham of Alexandria, VA, great grandchildren: Katie Orchard and Zachary Bingham. She was predeceased by a grandson: Scott Sowter in 1996 and two brothers: Roger and Francis Bettencourt.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, January 3, 2009 (Saturday) at the Abington Congregational Church, Hampton Road (Rte 97) Abington.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Resident Recreational Activity Fund, Westview Health Center, PO Box 428, Dayville, CT 06241.
