Obituary of John H. Nelson
John H. Nelson, 86, of Walnut Street, Putnam, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 18, 2009 at home. He was born July 3, 1922 in Middletown, son of the late William and Lillian (Moard) Nelson.
He retired from Crabtree and Evelyn where he was a supervisor. John was also employed at Danco and Belding Hemingway. He was a gifted and well know upholsterer in the area. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the US Army. He served with the Medical Detachment of the 184th Infantry as a medical aid man. He served in the Eastern Mandates, Southern Philippines and the Aleutian Islands. He received a Silver Star, the Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Battle Stars, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars and the American Theater Ribbon. He was honorably discharged September 19, 1945. He was a communicant of St Mary Church of the Visitation in Putnam and had a great love of antiques, his beautiful flower gardens and loved to travel.
He leaves his long time friend John Gonsalves of Putnam, his brother Frederick Nelson and his wife Lucille of Putnam his sisters, Jean Johnson of Putnam, Joan Bellanceau of Ocalla, FL, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Francis Nelson, Donald Nelson, Robert Nelson and Ronald Nelson.
A Graveside Service will be 11:30 AM Monday April 27, 2009 in ST Mary Cemetery, 259 Providence Street, Putnam with military honors. Smith & Walker Funeral Home, Putnam is directing arrangements. To share a memory with his family "Light a Candle" at www.smithandwalkerfh.com
