Obituary of Winnifred R. Davis

Winnifred Rose LePire Davis, of Pomfret, beloved wife of Walter Davis, died at the age of 93 on August 20, 2006. She was active for many years at St. Phillips Church as treasurer of the vestry and member of the choir and of St. Elizabeths Circle. Upon graduating from Putnam High School in 1930, she became a secretary in the office at Belding Hemingway. After raising a family, she took the position of secretary in the headmasters office at Pomfret School. Retiring in 1975 after 25 years, she served as part time secretary to the Pomfret Superintendent of Schools. Many will remember the blazing zinnias and marigolds in her roadside garden on Route 44.She traveled several times in England, where her mother was born, and was an avid reader.Many examples of her exceptional crewel work are enjoyed by her family. She is mourned by her son, Robert Davis, of Freedley Rd., and her daughters, Kathleen Davis of Mason, MI and Judith Miller of Branford.She leaves six grandchildren:Kathleen Miller of Middletown, Sharon Hogue of Putnam, David Hildebrandt of Mason, MI, William Hildebrandt of Lafayette, OR, Maureen Lane of Pomfret, and Scott Miller of Portland, ME.She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Friday at 11:00 am at ST Philips Episcopal Church, Grove Street, Putnam. No calling hours, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
