Raymond Elliott

Obituary of Raymond A. Elliott

Raymond A. Elliott, 87, formerly of Wilkinson Street in Putnam, died Monday, February 18th at Haven Health Center of Danielson after a 15-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born November 30, 1920, the son of the late Arthur and Jane (Armstrong) Elliott, and was educated in the Tourtellotte School system. Ray was an excellent athlete and had an exceptional talent for golf. Raymond served in the US Marine Corps and was assigned to duty on the USS Iowa, and later fulfilled his service as the personal attache to the commanding officer at the Groton Submarine Base. Raymond was a career newspaperman having started his working life in 1946 with the Hartford Times. At the time of the newspaper's demise in 1976, Ray was the manager of circulation for all of eastern Connecticut. He finished his working life in the same position for the Norwich Bulletin from which he retired in 1985. Ray was an avid sports fan. He grew up a fan of the New York Giants and the Boston Red Sox, but truly enjoyed all sports with golf being his favorite. His keen sense of recall allowed him to share his experiences of having seen the likes of Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Bob Feller, and Sammy Baugh in person. Raymond was an avid golfer and a 57-year member of Quinnatisset Country Club in Thompson. If he weren't out on the course, he could probably be found on the porch of the clubhouse visiting with his friends and sharing the events of the day. Raymond was also a member of the Congregational Church of Putnam having served on a number of different committees through the years - most notably the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees. He was also one of the founding members of the Windham County Interchurch Dartball League, which had its inception in 1950. He leaves his wife of 57 years Victoria Elliott of Danielson, his son Bruce Elliott of Putnam, his daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Jon Mitchell of Hebron, and his two grandchildren Elliott and Zoe Mitchell. He also leaves his two brothers -Edgar Elliott of Brooklyn, and Harry Elliott of Thompson. A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church of Putnam on Sunday, February 24th at 2:00 PM. Burial at a later date in West Thompson Cemtery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Congregational Church of Putnam. The Smith & Walker Funeral Home, Putnam, CT is in charge of the arrangements. To share a memory with his family "Light A Candle" at www.smithandwalkerfh.com
